The golden emperor
- 2026
- 3d print, golden spray
The work reproduces the gold bust of Marcus Aurelius found in the Swiss town of Avenches in 1939. The replica, 3D-printed and covered in gold spray paint, departs from the original by altering the emperor’s facial expression into a seraphic smile. Accustomed as we are by classical statuary to the motionless severity of the subjects portrayed, we find our unconscious expectations confounded, and an unprecedented possibility of connection with the great emperor opens up.
