To mark the anniversary of Lucio Fontana’s Sacred Heart, the San Fedele Cultural Foundation commissioned me to create a new artwork. The result was a video installation, a rare presence within a liturgical space.
The film, entirely silent, juxtaposes cardiac MRI scans with a series of Flemish engravings by the Wierix family, Cor Jesu amanti sacrum. Images and text, written by me and inspired by the Latin verses accompanying similar engravings, unfold to the rhythm of a heartbeat, echoing the cadence of Catholic litanies.
This “digital litany” seeks to explore how the so-called spiritual ailments of the heart, such as anxiety and loneliness, can have tangible consequences for the physical heart.
